Chapter Twenty: Constella

The way to Antagules’s cottage led along a path through the forest where Antagules had sent them all back to Valanthas previously. They took a right, rather than heading towards the stone circle, and the route twisted between some very curious trees with leaves that seemed to shimmer between dark green and a purple hue. Tiny lights flew all about, hovering nearby as though watching the companions. Archimegadon swore at a few of them that kept whirring around his face.

‘Why are you all still in your pyjamas?’ Antagules asked as they followed the forest path.

‘Erm, well, I only worked out how to teleport on a spur of the moment,’ Archimegadon replied.

‘Oh, that’s right, you teleported here without the staff,’ Antagules said. ‘You know that I was very impressed when Sen Delarian managed it with the staff, and he was a genius.’

‘Well, then you know what I am,’ Archimegadon said.

‘An old windbag,’ Obdo said.

Archimegadon made to rap Obdo on the forehead with the Staff of Antagules when he recalled that he didn’t have the damn thing. He cuffed Obdo round the back of the head instead.

‘Such a violent man,’ Obdo said.

‘Pack it in, you two,’ Antagules said. ‘Forseld, you don’t actually mean spur-of-the-moment, do you?’

‘Ah, but I do indeed,’ Archimegadon replied. ‘One has merely to remember the location and focus very strongly on that location, ignoring all other distractions. The rest is magic!’

‘You idiot, do you have any idea how easily that can go wrong?’ Antagules asked, ducking below an errant tree limb.

‘The important thing is that it didn’t,’ Archimegadon replied.

‘I’m putting a ban on you teleporting,’ Antagules said. ‘I don’t want you messing around with that sort of magic. You could end up somewhere bizarre, leave yourself in several pieces, or even trigger a cataclysmic magical backlash that might devastate the world!’

‘Why, it wasn’t all that hard once I realised the trick behind it,’ Archimegadon said. ‘You just picture the place – say, that tree over there – and…’

‘No!’ Antagules shouted an unfamiliar word, and a cloud of magic appeared around Archimegadon’s mouth.

Archimegadon waved his arms around and his mouth seemed to be forming words, but no sound came out.

‘Please do that more often,’ Obdo said.

‘I’ll use it on you next,’ Antagules said. ‘Now listen, old man, I do not want you playing with teleporting in future. I appreciate that it was important to get in contact with me, but toying with magic is one of the most dangerous things you can possibly do.’

Archimegadon folded his arms and glared at her, his mouth still moving soundlessly.

‘It’s like talking to toddlers,’ Antagules said. She waved her hand, and the cloud of magic faded away.

‘…Bollocks,’ Archimegadon finished saying as his voice returned. ‘Hmm, I suppose that was an accurate summary. But very well, I shan’t devastate the world, this time.’

‘That’s just as well,’ Antagules said.

‘I’ve done it twice now without devastating the world, though,’ Archimegadon added.

‘No, Forseld, you’re not doing any more teleporting!’

‘Bah.’ Archimegadon waved off a few more of the flying lights.
